Rewarding Frustrations

"I think my involvement in art has a lot to do with where I was raised - outside Washington DC. After my parents separated, and I was sequestered to the languid cultural environs of Florida, I would venture on excursions through the museums in DC on my own, while visiting my father there. I was a broke and bored teenager whose dwindling amount of friends in the area were still in school. I quickly realized that I could watch films from China at the Smithsonian’s Freer Gallery of Art, watch some Surrealist films and stand immersed in “Lavender Mist” at the National Gallery. And then I would forgo lunch to be able to pick up a 7” at Go! Records on my way home. All in one trip. I had never thought about making art, I just liked being in its presence."
