Drone your sorrows
According to local artist Terence Hannum, watching a drone band perform live is like experiencing the sublime. ìYou get this kind of ecstatic sensation and in a way, witness a transcendence,î he says. ì[The band Sunn 0)))] conducts this ritual almostóthe elaborate lights, the robes, fog machine...And itís extremely loud. Edmund Burke explored the philosophical realm that you canít experience ecstasy, or know beauty, without terror.î Hannum hopes to have others explore this realm with his new video installation piece on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art (220 E Chicago Ave, 312-280-2660). He is projecting video footage recorded at Logan Square Auditorium of Sunn 0))) (pronounced ìsunî)óa group that produces a slow and heavy sound and uses droning guitar feedback and other sound effects to create physical vibrations in its audience members. The visuals will be presented on three screens, in a medieval triptych-style; the middle screen will feature its own reel, anchoring the installation, while the left and right will share a reel, with one of the images flipped horizontally. ìTheyíll be mirrors of each other,î Hannum says. ìIt kind of engulfs you.î The sound in the room will too. The exhibition has a running time of 25 minutesóand Hannum plans on ìcranking the volume outî even more when he leads a guided tour at 6:30pm Tuesday 13. Local drone band Lichens will perform at 6pm.
