In 1981 Oldsmobile gave a complimentary tape cartridge with every vehicle featuring Willie Nelson, Linda Ronstadt, Kenny Rogers, Bob Seger and more. Often found in thrift stores this tape is almost worthless. "Tape Cartridge" as a zine takes a design element of the complimentary cassette and plays with it generating new compositions from the tape.

5.5" x 8.5"
Edition of 50

“The Best Of continues my series of zines using cassette tape j-cards to generate abstractions using the information sheet from the mid-1980s cassette "The Best of The Band”, compiling the root-rock group’s greatest hits onto one cassette. The Best Of as a zine showcases the spaces in the design, the hard edge abstract black and white forms as a meditation on negative space.“

In a continuation from my past zines such as "17" and "Tusk" I took the j-card from the album "You Can Tune A Piano...But You Can't Tuna Fish" by REO Speedwagon and composed with the logo of the Epic Records Company to make a formal study.

"INTERSOUND focuses on the "slip sheets" found inside of cassette tapes. These gray teflon forms were used to reduce friction between the tape shell and moving spools of cassette tape. In the process of destroying cassettes to retrieve the magnetic tape for my new work I have accumulated many of these sheets and have identified quite a few different forms the cassette manufactures would use. Those forms can be further abstracted to make other more unique forms. INTERSOUND is the beginnings of an intuitive formal investigation brought on by a found material that is literally among the sound."

A project begun over a year ago, two friends on opposite sides of the globe decided to make some publications together.

In Terence Hannum's contribution to "Epistle" his zine showcases recent pieces made by adhering the magnetic coating of old cassette tapes to paper and peeling off the mylar backing. These silent ghosts of obsolescent media are stratified into abstract and minimal compositions.

Bagus Jalang's contribution to "Epistle" consists of a zine of tediously drafted organic forms composed of small circles. The forms these meticulously drawn circles make resemble sections of earth, stalactites or other geologic formations all floating in expanses of negative space.
